Minnesota to Premiere Stephenson Low Brass Concerto

In March of this year, the Minnesota Orchestra announced their 2017-2018 season. While many concerts will be a joy for the audiences, the season sendoff will feature trombones and a Mahler symphony – but not at the same time.

In June of 2018, Minnesota will end its season giving the world premiere of James Stephenson‘s Low Brass Concerto – a piece written specifically for the low brass members of the Orchestra. A former professional trumpet player, Stephenson has quickly become a prolific composer for the modern day brass players.

This will be the second major low brass concerto premiered in the United States during the 2017-2018 season. The four soloists for the concerto include R. Douglas Wright, Kari Sundström (Trombones), Andrew Chappell (Bass Trombone), and Steven Campbell (Tuba). The concert will then conclude with the Orchestra’s rendition of Mahler’s Fourth Symhony with Carolyn Sampson as the soprano soloist.

The performances will occur on June 15-16 2018, at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.
