Philadelphia Low Brass To Perform Concerto By Hometown Composer

Jennifer Higdon has always been a popular composer among low brass players. With a trombone concerto and an upcoming tuba concerto, her recently written Concerto for Low Brass is currently making its round among world-class orchestras. Last weekend, the Chicago Symphony gave a world premiere of the Concerto with the orchestra’s legendary low brass section. In two weeks, that same piece will be performed featuring the strong low brass section of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Higdon’s Concerto for Low Brass is a co-commissioned piece by the Chicago, Philadelphia, and Baltimore orchestras. The performances conducted by Cristian Macelaru will be February 22, 23, and 24, 2018 at Verizon Hall, Philadephia, Pennsylvania. The soloists for the concerto are Nitzan Haroz, Matt Vaughn, Blair Bollinger (Bass Trombone), and Carol Jantsch (Tuba). This will be the first of two front-stage features for Jantsch this season as she is also performing the John Williams Concerto for Tuba with Philadelphia later in April of this year.

Other works on this “Beethoven, Brahms and Brass” program are:

  • Kodály – Dances of Marosszék
  • Beethoven – Symphony No. 8
  • Brahms – Hungarian Dances
