Tuesdays on the Tube: Chris Brubeck Bass Trombone Concerto

Recently, one of the orchestras I regularly perform with has asked me to play a piece with them next year. As I have been searching and listening, one piece that has come up for me is the Chris Brubeck Concerto for Bass Trombone. You may recognize the name “Brubeck.” Chris is the son of the famous jazz legend, Dave Brubeck and by following in his father’s footsteps, he has become a prolific composer and performer. With two bass trombone concertos published, he has also recorded the first concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra. I was fortunate enough to find two performances via YouTube – one with a wind band and one with an orchestra.

There are two reasons why I like this piece:
1) It is an ORIGINAL Bass Trombone Concerto.

2) This concerto really shows off the capability of the instrument. Whether playing pedal notes or in the higher register, this piece requires an artist with strength as well as finesse.
