Tuesdays on the Tube: Euphonium and Hip-Hop

If I didn’t play trombone, the euphonium would be an instrument I would pursue full-time. The beautiful tones it can create is very soothing and relaxing. Whether it is “Danny Boy” or a version of “Czardas,” a talented euphonium artist can make it sound so effortless.

Matthew White is no exception to this standard of playing. A British euphonium artist studying with the legendary Steven Mead at the Royal Northern College of Music, Matt is winning the top brass band competitions and rising (quickly) in the brass band world as a soloist. A few years ago, Matt was given the opportunity to perform on a global stage for the well-known TED talks.

Outside of the music world, the euphonium is not a well-known instrument. When given the chance to highlight an uncommon instrument to a worldwide audience, you want to make a lasting impression. In the video below from his TED Talk, you will see Matt fuse a brass instrument with hip-hop. The second video shows his incredible virtuosic skills as a soloist.

Enjoy!
