Tuesdays on the Tube: J.J. Johnson/Kai Winding

jkw2

This week’s selection is J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding, one of the great jazz duos on trombone. Their album, The Great Kai and J.J., was one of the first jazz albums I bought and it has set a standard for jazz in my books. Not only being great soloists but also being a great duet, their ensemble playing is fantastic.

This video shows great harmonies and great technique. One of my favorite characteristics about legendary jazz players is how effortless they look while playing. They are able to convey creativity to the listeners and make it sound so easy.

Enjoy this video of a Hoosier and Danish-American trombone duo. Hopefully this will spark interest in listening to more of their playing this week.

Cheers and Vinyl!
