Tuesdays on the Tube: Jörgen Van Rijen

jorgen

Today, I would like to feature an international soloist and principal trombonist based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Jörgen Van Rijen has been principal trombonist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam since 1997. Before that, he was principal trombone with the Rotterdam Philharmonic.

As a soloist he has performed with many orchestras all over the world, and gave his solo debut with the Royal Concertgebouw in 2001, performing Henri Tomasi’s Trombone Concerto. In addition to his orchestral playing, Jörgen performs in the ensemble, The New Trombone Collective, a group of professional trombonists that have produced many well-received recordings.

Jörgen has recorded a number of albums as a soloist and with orchestras. One of my favorites is his debut album, which includes his performance of the Tomasi with the Royal Concertgebouw. One of his other albums features the Albrechtsberger Concerto performed on Sackbutt.

The Youtube video featured today is of Mr. Van Rijen’s performance of Guy Ropartz’s Piece in E-flat minor. The performance was well received at the 2005 International Trombone Festival in New Orleans. As you listen to this performance, take notice of the effort and liberty Jörgen displays during both the fast and slow sections. The control of the instrument in the high and low ranges inspiring.

Cheers and Bones!
