Tuesdays on the Tube: Wagner – Chicago Symphony – Solti

Growing up as a kid, I only knew about the legendary Chicago Symphony Brass Section. In 1999 (I was 11 years old), I wrote a letter to Edward Kleinhammer about a variety of things. He wrote back with a wealth of information and was very kind and gracious in his letter. That year, I was also able to hear the CSO LIVE for the first time – talk about a kid being in a “candy store.” In the golden age of brass, the Chicago Symphony Brass WAS THEE brass section. In this video of Wagner’s Overture to The Flying Dutchman, you get a taste of the low brass section being “in sync” with each other. There is a quick clip (6:20) in the video where the video is focused on Kleinhammer and Arnold Jacobs; and it looks as if they are passing quick breaths in between each other. One breaths at one time; the other breaths right after. That kind of section playing only happens with so many years sitting side by side.

Enjoy!
