French Horn Consortium Opportunity

Katey Jahnke Halbert has announced a french horn consortium commission for a ten-minute sonata with piano to be written by Catherine McMichael. The composition not only will be an important addition to the horn repertoire but also will increase the number of horn works by female composers.

Tahquamenon Falls

Katey, currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Iowa, has performed with groups such as Quad Cities Symphony, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus, and the West Virginia Symphony. Catherine McMichael is a prolific composer with commissions recently from the Canadian Brass, Saginaw Bay Orchestra, and many other ensembles. Her works have been performed by Seraph Brass, University of Wisconsin River Falls, Mary Elizabeth Bowden, and others.

Pictured Rocks Bridalveil Falls

What makes this a unique project is both Katey and Katherine are Michigan natives. Using the many natural landmarks throughout the state, this sonata hopes to conceive images of Lake SuperiorTahquamenon Falls, and Pictured Rocks throughout its movements. This Sonata will be premiered at the International Women’s Brass Conference in May 2019 at Arizona State University.
