Pittsburgh Releases Recording of Strauss Horn Concerto

It has been some time since we have seen a major symphony orchestra record a brass concerto (When was the last time a major orchestra recorded a brass concerto?). With Pittsburgh lately producing stellar recordings, including their 2018 Grammy-winning album of Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, the PSO is always on track to record substantial works at a very high level. Their newest album, being released on September 21st, features Beethoven’s mighty Symphony No. 3 ‘Eroica’ and Richard Strauss’ Horn Concerto No. 1. Playing the horn concerto is William Caballero, the powerful-sounding Principal Horn of the PSO. Both of these works invoke heroically, triumph sounds – something that Pittsburgh is always comfortable doing.

According to this article, the liner notes contain writings from Manfred Honeck, Music Director of the PSO, as well as a Q-and-A discussion between Honeck and Caballero.
