Watkins To Give World Premiere Of Horn Concerto

Mark-Anthony Turnage has always been a familiar name in the British classical world with his magnificent orchestra, chamber, and operatic music. For brass players, Turnage has written multiple works for solo and orchestra including:

Now on the calendar to begin the Philharmonia Orchestra‘s 75th birthday celebration, Turnage has been commissioned to compose a new horn concerto that will be performed by the former Principal Horn Richard Watkins. This piece is guaranteed to include many of the colorful and heroic sounds expected from the masterful composer.

Leading the orchestra for the special performance will be Esa-Pekka Salonen, whose musical life began with playing the horn. Other works to be included on the program include:

  • Weber – Overture, Der Freischütz
  • Britten –  Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings
    • featuring Allan Clayton, tenor
  • Strauss – Till Eulenspiegel

The performance will be Thursday, January 16, 2020, in the Royal Festival Hall in London.
