Chicago Symphony to Premiere Low Brass Concerto

The Chicago Symphony has announced its 2017-2018 season. Many of the works being performed include premieres including a low brass concerto written by Jennifer Higdon. Many brass players may recognize her name as the composer of many great works including blue cathedral. In addition to other works, this Pulitzer-prize winning composer wrote a trombone concerto for Peter Sullivan, Principal Trombone of the Pittsburgh Symphony.

Now Ms. Higdon’s creative skills are in the works for the legendary low brass section of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. This section, which has been together since 1989, includes Jay Friedman, Michael Mulcahy, Charles Vernon, and Gene Pokorny. The world premiere of this concerto will take place on a subscription series for the CSO in February 2018 as well as a performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City later that month.
