The Inaugural Philip Jones International Brass Ensemble Competition

The name Philip Jones is easily synonymous with brass ensembles. (If you are under the age of 25, here is what you need to know about him). Forming one of the most illustrious brass ensembles in the world, PJBE performed and recorded throughout the world from 1951-1986. Many of the groups’ members were equally famous in their own right, and joining together the group created a great powerhouse ensemble. Names like Denis Wick, James Watson, John Fletcher, Elgar Howarth, Maurice Murphy, and Raymond Premru performed for many years with the group.

Now, with the help of Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, UK, the first PBJE International Brass Ensemble Competition will begin, with an emphasis on brass quintets from around the world. The competition with prize money will take place July 15-20, 2019 and is open to brass players between the age of 16 and 30.
