Principal Horn of Columbus Symphony Passes Away

 

 

Last week on August 31, 2017, Gene Standley, the Principal Horn of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra passed away due to injuries suffered in a car accident. Standley, born in Pittsburgh, PA, had been a professional musician since the age of 17. Both of his parents played horn in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra during the 1950s. Studying at the Curtis Institute of Music, Standley performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra for 10 years before coming to the Columbus Symphony in 1990. Outside of performing, Standley enjoyed spending time on the family farm and collecting/selling vinyl records. Standley was also a 3-year survivor of cancer. He was 65 years old.

Jeremy Smith

Jeremy E. Smith is the Founder and Editor of Last Row Music. He received music degrees from Grace College, Carnegie Mellon University, and The Ohio State University. Currently, Jeremy is the bass trombonist of the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, the Huntington Symphony Orchestra, and performs throughout Ohio, where he lives with his wife and two sons. Smith is a member of the International Trombone Association and the Jazz Journalists Association.
