A Guide to the Trombone Category of the 2022 ARD International Music Competition Munich

The ARD International Music Competition Munich is one of the grandest classical music competitions in the world. The winner’s list contains a Who’s Who of legendary musicians ranging from Mitsuko Uchida to Christoph Eschenbach to Maurice André to Jessye Norman. Instruments categories rotate every few years with the 71st edition offering a trombone category in addition to flute, string quartet, and piano. The prestigious trombone category last took place in 2015 with Michael Buchanan of Great Britain taking the First Prize.

Schedule

This year’s event will take place from August 31st to September 9th with the first round occurring between August 31st and September 2nd. A full schedule (with repertoire selections) can be viewed here and details found at the bottom of this article.

Jeremy Smith

Jeremy E. Smith is the Founder and Editor of Last Row Music. He received music degrees from Grace College, Carnegie Mellon University, and The Ohio State University. Currently, Jeremy is the bass trombonist of the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, the Huntington Symphony Orchestra, and performs throughout Ohio, where he lives with his wife and two sons. Smith is a member of the International Trombone Association and the Jazz Journalists Association.
