Adam Rainey Wins Bass Trombone Position With Detroit Symphony Orchestra

In June 2022, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) held a bass trombone audition for the seat vacated by Randy Hawes, who previously held the seat for 35 years. After four days of auditions, Adam Rainey was declared the winner.

Before winning the DSO audition, Rainey was the bass trombonist for the Kansas City Symphony which he joined in the 2014-15 season. In addition to playing with the Kansas City Symphony, he has performed numerous times with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony, and Pittsburgh Symphony, among others.

Rainey is a graduate of the New England Conservatory where he studied with Douglas Yeo and James Markey.

Jeremy E. Smith is the Founder and Editor of Last Row Music. He received music degrees from Grace College, Carnegie Mellon University, and The Ohio State University. Currently, Jeremy is the bass trombonist of the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, the Huntington Symphony Orchestra, and performs throughout Ohio, where he lives with his wife and two sons. Smith is a member of the International Trombone Association and the Jazz Journalists Association.
