Former Cleveland Orchestra Trombonist Dies At 92

Allen Kofsky, one of the trombonists in the Cleveland Orchestra during the George Szell years, passed away on Thursday, June 7th, 2018, at the age of 92. Kofsky, a Cleveland native and graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, was a member of the Kansas City Philharmonic after serving his country during World War II. After seven years in Kansas City, Kofsky moved back to Cleveland to help in his father’s masonry business. It was during this time that Kofsky was a regular substitute for the Cleveland Orchestra. After six years with subbing in Szell’s mighty orchestra, Kofsky was finally invited to become a permanent fixture in the legendary section performing Second Trombone, Bass Trumpet, and Euphonium role for a lengthy 39-year career. In addition to performing with Cleveland, Kofsky also taught at the Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music.
