Mondays with the Marching Band: Marshall University Marching Thunder

For today’s post, I want to highlight a marching band that I am looking forward to watching this season. Marshall University is in a conference that is not always in the spotlight; however, the talent from Conference USA can rival much of the other “big name” conferences. The same goes for the marching bands throughout the C-USA.

The Marshall University Marching Thunder recently acquired a new Director of Athletic Bands. Adam Dalton has much experience in the marching world and recently finished his degrees at The University of Alabama (Million Dollar Band). In addition to his experience with the Alabama band program, Dalton has been quite active in the Drum Corps International (DCI) world. Marching with the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, he currently is a teacher and drill designer with many drum and bugle groups. His expertise and knowledge should make the shows quite exciting this football season!

The Marching Thunder have a special place in my heart, particularly because of my dad’s involvement with the band. My father attended Marshall from 1972-1976, and was in the Marching Band all four years (before they were known as the Marching Thunder). I have heard the stories of when the games used to be at the Fairfield Stadium not far from the current venue, the Joan C. Edwards Stadium. He particularly remembers when the stadium laid down Astroturf for the new field. Basically, imagine trying to march on a spongy rug that is on top of cement. There were probably many blisters and  sore feet after those games.

But now, technology has become more advanced. Marshall’s football team should have an exciting season with a good schedule. The same goes for the Marching Thunder! If you are unfamiliar with this band, be sure to watch them as they will hopefully provide new, innovative shows with a great sound.

Cheers and Vinyl……and Go Herd!
