Ricardo Pereira Publishes New Trombone Books

Ricardo Pereira, a Greenhoe Trombone artist, has published three books that are now available in both Portuguese and English. Pereira is currently the trombone soloist for Remix Ensemble Casa da Música, and a professor at both Lisbon University of Music and the Calouste Gulbenkian Braga Conservatory of Music.

7 Warm-Up Routines

This book, 7 Warm-Up Routines, is designed to give to trombone players daily warm-up options to develop key aspects of instrument technique and performance. Believing in the effectiveness that this work can have, its practice in conjunction with the music tracks will allow the musician to improve important elements from sound quality, pitch and rhythm faster than practicing without this accompaniment. Each warm-up consists of 6 separate exercises lasting approximately 20 minutes and is organized with the same structure: 1 mouthpiece buzzing exercise (our “real” instrument), 1 activation exercise (connect buzzing with the instrument), 3 lip slur exercises (for control and strengthening of the embouchure) and 1 articulation exercise (developing air-tongue-slide coordination). The book is available in Portuguese and English.

Other Directions

“To get to where most don’t go, you have to do what most don’t.”

This method consists of performing one routine per day, seven in total. The objective is to perform the exercises on a continuous basis in order to maintain the established structure; In the end, if necessary, we can go back and spend more time on any exercise or weakness we encounter. It is important to follow the recommendations presented throughout the method.
To ensure reliability in the application of this method, the player must have the discipline to establish a daily routine over a long period of time. Of course, it is acceptable to miss one day or another, the important thing is to slowly and safely develop our skills in every session. Each routine is efficient, so the content of this book may be the most important part of daily practice because the time spent working on the fundamentals of the instrument will help in developing overall performance.
