Tubist Starts Recording Project To Highlight Music By Young Black Composers

Jasmine Pigott, currently a graduate student at Michigan State University, has been on a quest to amplify more diversity in the tuba world. From her time as a child with watching Veggie Tale’s Larry the Cucumber to hearing the recordings of tubist Velvet Brown, music has played a vital role in Pigott’s life. As she began to explore the standard tuba literature lists, Pigott noticed a lack of diversity in various curriculum requirements. For example, in a list published by the International Tuba-Euphonium Association, Pigott found that out of the 550 compositions on the list, zero were composed by Black composers.

As a result, Pigott has started a Kickstarter project that, if fully funded, will allow for an EP of music composed by three young Black composers (Malachi Brown, Keeghan Fountain, and Daijana Wallace). Each of these works will be written for tuba and will be recorded by Pigott. As of this writing, the project has raised over $4,800 with the fundraising ending on September 25th.
