University of Iowa Horn Professor Retires After 21 Years

Jeffrey Agrell, Associate Professor of Horn at the University of Iowa, has retired following the 2020-2021 academic year. Before his 21 years of teaching at Iowa, Agrell spent 25 years performing in the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra. During his career, Agrell has written numerous books, articles, and compositions related to the horn, improvisation, and musicianship. In addition, he has released four recordings. Many of Agrell’s students have gone on to professional and academic careers as the horn studio at the University of Iowa has always produced a strong pool of students. Dr. Katy Ambrose, former Assistant Professor of Horn at the University of Virginia, will begin her position as the University of Iowa’s Visiting Assistant Professor of Horn in the fall.

Jeremy E. Smith is the Founder and Editor of Last Row Music. He received music degrees from Grace College, Carnegie Mellon University, and The Ohio State University. Currently, Jeremy is the bass trombonist of the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, the Huntington Symphony Orchestra, and performs throughout Ohio, where he lives with his wife and two sons. Smith is a member of the International Trombone Association and the Jazz Journalists Association.
