University of North Texas To Host Second Annual Jazz Trombone Day and Competition

The University of North Texas is excited to announce the second annual UNT Jazz Trombone Day and Competition, to be held on UNT’s Denton campus on Saturday, November 21, 2020. This free, virtual event is poised to take center stage as one of the premier jazz trombone competitions worldwide. The international competition is open to all trombonists ages 30 and under (as of the submission deadline). Finalists will receive travel and accommodations to compete in the final round of the competition during the UNT Jazz Trombone Day.

This event serves to inspire through great guest artist and student performances, educate our students and the community through clinics, promote the instrument through the development of young trombone artists via the competition, and collaborate with great companies that share our passion for jazz and jazz education.

The UNT Jazz Trombone Day is open to the public but does require a pre-registration via the official website. The virtul event will include masterclasses by artists such as Elliot Mason, Nick Finzer, Reginald Chapman, Melissa Gardner, Jim Pugh, Vincent Gardner, Kevin Hicks, Tony Baker, the award-winning UNT U-Tubes Jazz Trombone Ensemble, the Three O’Clock Lab Band, and others!

The submission deadline for the competition is 11:59 PM on October 20th, 2020.

Prizes: Three finalists will be chosen to perform at the BAC Instruments/UNT Jazz Trombone Day (VIRTUALLY) on Saturday, November 21, 2020, to compete in the live round of the competition.

The Winner of the BAC Instruments/UNT Jazz Trombone Competition will receive a:

  • BAC Handcraft Series Trombone
  • Scholarship to attend UNT (toward a degree with Jazz Trombone concentration at the bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral level)

Jeremy Smith

Jeremy E. Smith is the Founder and Editor of Last Row Music. He received music degrees from Grace College, Carnegie Mellon University, and The Ohio State University. Currently, Jeremy is the bass trombonist of the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra and performs throughout Ohio, where he lives with his wife and two sons. Smith is a member of the International Trombone Association and the Jazz Journalists Association.
