Two Resources For Your Next Audition

As aspiring musicians, we are always looking for “that thing” that will help us succeed at our next audition. Every person has a different routine that they do while preparing for an audition or some weird quirk they perform on audition day (jumping jacks anyone?). Yes, practicing the excerpts and listening to recordings are important, but sometimes, we may be missing another facet of preparation that may not be taught in the schools. These two resources have had good success with preparing musicians for that next audition.

1. Audition Hacker

Rob Knopper, Percussionist with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, has started an invaluable audition resource. Yes, a percussionist can certainly teach a tuba player on how to win an audition. Rob has created this online community that is helping all sorts of orchestral musicians succeed at their next audition. Whether it is his blog posts or his audition academy, anyone can learn from the wisdom that he and many others have offered to audition preparation.

2. The Bulletproof Musician

The mental side of auditions is entirely different beast and one that really has to be studied and even experienced. Yes there are the rare stories of musicians who have won every audition they have ever taken. But most likely, the majority of musicians take many MANY auditions before they win a gig.

Enter Dr. Kageyama. He was like many of us – practicing religiously and performing regularly. He then became fascinated by the psychology of music performance to the point of receiving a Ph.D in pyschology from Indiana University. Today, he is a teacher at the Juilliard School and the New World Symphony and runs The Bulletproof Musician, a resource and community designed to help musicians cope with performance anxiety.
