Avant-Garde Trumpeter Dies at 82

Born in Paris with studies throughout Europe and New York, Jacques Coursil was a talented trumpeter who recorded with Frank Wright, Marion Brown, and Sun Ra & The Arkestra. In addition to being a prolific jazz artist, Coursil spent much of his career in higher education teaching mathematics, linguistic theory, and literature. Two of his later albums used contemporary techniques to express “the misery inflicted upon Native Americans by the Indian Removal Act.” – Jazzwise
