Indiana University Appoints David Murray to Trombone Faculty

On May 14, 2026, the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music announced David Murray as professor of trombone, beginning August 1, 2026.

Previously, David Murray was Second Trombone with the National Symphony Orchestra, a position he started in 2014 under Christoph Eschenbach. As an educator, Murray was on faculty at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University from 2017 to 2026. In addition, he has given masterclasses at institutions such as Eastman School of Music, Northwestern University, Michigan State University, and many others.

A graduate of the Eastman School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music, Murray’s primary teachers included Blair Bollinger, John Marcellus, Ralph Sauer, and Christopher Dudley.

Jeremy E. Smith is the Founder and Editor of Last Row Music. He received music degrees from Grace College, Carnegie Mellon University, and The Ohio State University. Currently, Jeremy is the bass trombonist of the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra and performs throughout Ohio, where he lives with his wife and two sons. Smith is a member of the International Trombone Association and the Jazz Journalists Association.
