Matt Hightower Joins Brass Faculty at Indiana University

On February 23, 2026, the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University announced Matt Hightower as the Associate Professor of Tuba and Euphonium. Hightower’s position begins August 1, 2026

A graduate of Indiana University, Hightower is currently the Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Florida State University and has held similar positions at the University of Kentucky and Texas A&M University – Kingsville. In addition, he is the Principal Tuba of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra and is a member of the Emerald Brass Quintet.

The position of tuba professor at Indiana has held a longstanding tradition, previously with Daniel Perantoni and Harvey Phillips. The Brass Department chair Joey Tartell says that “As this job broadens to include euphonium, we couldn’t be more excited to have Matt Hightower joining us. He is an excellent educator, tuba player, euphonium player, and composer. We’re happy to welcome him back to Bloomington.”

Jeremy Smith

Jeremy E. Smith is the Founder and Editor of Last Row Music. He received music degrees from Grace College, Carnegie Mellon University, and The Ohio State University. Currently, Jeremy is the bass trombonist of the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra and performs throughout Ohio, where he lives with his wife and two sons. Smith is a member of the International Trombone Association and the Jazz Journalists Association.
