New Consortium for Contrabass Trombone, Bass Trombone, Percussion, and Narrator

New Piece for Bass Trombone/Contrabass Trombone – “The Blue Mountain” 

Based on the historical novel of the same name written by Justo Sellés López.

A Consortium started by Javier Colomer (Brass Profiles member):
“For a long time, I have been building a musical and pedagogical world around the Bass Trombone and also the Contrabass Trombone. In 1999 it occurred to me to order a work for Bass Trombone and Wind Band. The work was premiered in 2000. The result was a great personal satisfaction and the audience loved it. At that moment, I realized that it was a good reason to continue commissioning works for Bass Trombone.”

“In 2002, I started my journey with the Contrabass Trombone and I found a great shortage of music to play as a soloist with this instrument. I started the challenge of growing the repertoire of both instruments with works written for me and focusing largely on the Contrabass Trombone.”

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PIECE

Title of the piece, LA MONTAÑA AZUL. (The Blue Mountain) This title is inspired by the legend about AL-AZRAQ (the one with the blue eyes) and the mountains where he had to hide so as not to be captured by King Jaime I.

This new composition will be about 12 minutes in length. It will be a piece with epic motifs, rhythmic passages, melodic motifs, with different effects and the use of mutes. It will be accompanied by percussion instruments and a narrator who will explain the historical facts.

The different languages of the narrative of this piece can be interpreted anywhere in the world will be Spanish, Valencian (local language) and English. More languages will be added on demand.

The piece consists of 3 movements reminding the three battles.

  • Resistance years 1243-1245
    • 1st Movement for Bass Trombone, percussion and narrator
  • First revolt 1247-1258
    • 2nd Movement for Contrabass Trombone (optional bass trombone), percussion and narrator
  • Second revolt 1276-1277
    • 3rd Movement for Bass Trombone, Contrabass Trombone (optional bass trombone), percussion and narrator

The premiere of the piece will take place on March 14, 2020, by Javier Colomer.

Jeremy Smith

Jeremy E. Smith is the Founder and Editor of Last Row Music. He received music degrees from Grace College, Carnegie Mellon University, and The Ohio State University. Currently, Jeremy is the bass trombonist of the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, the Huntington Symphony Orchestra, and performs throughout Ohio, where he lives with his wife and two sons. Smith is a member of the International Trombone Association and the Jazz Journalists Association.
