Two First Prize Winners in the Brass Category of the International Tchaikovsky Competition

The Jury has made their decision.

From 46 to 16 to 9 contestants, it has been a marvelous inaugural event for the Brass Category in this historic competition. After 9 finalists were selected, the jury made the following decisions and awarded the following prizes to the finalists. All finalists were prize winners (which is not always the case):

  • First Prize – Gold Medal and $30,000 (USD)
    • Yun Zeng (China, French Horn)
    • Aleksey Lobikov (Russia, Trombone)
  • Second Prize – Silver Medal and $20,000 (USD)
    • Fedor Shagov (Russia, Tuba)
  • Third Prize – Bronze Medal and $10,000 (USD)
    • Felix Camille Jean Dervaux (France, French Horn)
  • Fourth Prize – Diploma and $5,000 (USD)
    • Henrique dos Santos Costav (Portugal, Tuba)
  • Fifth Prize – Diploma and $4,000 (USD)
    • Ansel Owen Norris (USA, Trumpet)
  • Sixth Prize – Diploma and $3,000 (USD)
    • Peter Steiner (Italy, Trombone)
  • Seventh Prize – Diploma and $2,500 (USD)
    • Hae-Ree Yoo (The Republic of Korea, French Horn)
  • Eighth Prize – Diploma and $2,000 (USD)
    • Zhasulan Abdykalykov (Kazakhstan, Trumpet)

The overall winner from all categories of the competition will receive the Grand Prix and $100,000 in addition to their category’s First Prize. This winner will be announced during the Gala Concert on Saturday, June 29, 2019.

Jeremy Smith

Jeremy E. Smith is the Founder and Editor of Last Row Music. He received music degrees from Grace College, Carnegie Mellon University, and The Ohio State University. Currently, Jeremy is the bass trombonist of the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, the Huntington Symphony Orchestra, and performs throughout Ohio, where he lives with his wife and two sons. Smith is a member of the International Trombone Association and the Jazz Journalists Association.
