University of Michigan Names New Tuba Euphonium Professor

 

According to a press release from the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, David Zerkel has been named the new Professor of Tuba & Euphonium. Starting in the 2020-2021 academic year, Zerkel will continue a long lineage of tuba/euphonium professors that includes the late Abe Torchinsky (former Principal Tuba, Philadelphia Orchestra) and the recently retired Fritz Kaenzig.

Zerkel previously served as the Professor of Tuba & Euphonium at the University of Georgia, a position now been filled by Matthew Shipes.

Jeremy E. Smith is the Founder and Editor of Last Row Music. He received music degrees from Grace College, Carnegie Mellon University, and The Ohio State University. Currently, Jeremy is the bass trombonist of the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, the Huntington Symphony Orchestra, and performs throughout Ohio, where he lives with his wife and two sons. Smith is a member of the International Trombone Association and the Jazz Journalists Association.
