Ramsay Wins Berlin Philharmonic Principal Trombone Audition

On January 13th, the Berlin Philharmonic announced Jonathon Ramsay as the winner of their recent Principal Trombone audition. Currently the principal trombonist of the Munich Philharmonic, Ramsay is also a permanent member of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Ramsay will serve a probationary period with the Philharmonic to achieve tenure. 

Born in Sydney, Australia, Ramsay became Principal Trombone of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra at 20 years old. In 2018, he moved to Germany to begin studies with Olaf Ott at the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic. As a soloist, Ramsay won First Prize at the 2019 Aeolus International Competition and has performed with the orchestras of Düsseldorf, Göttingen, and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

According to SlippeDisc, Ramsay will be taking over the seat of Christhard Gössling who has been a member of the Philharmonic since 1984.

Jeremy E. Smith is the Founder and Editor of Last Row Music. He received music degrees from Grace College, Carnegie Mellon University, and The Ohio State University. Currently, Jeremy is the bass trombonist of the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, the Huntington Symphony Orchestra, and performs throughout Ohio, where he lives with his wife and two sons. Smith is a member of the International Trombone Association and the Jazz Journalists Association.
