Tchaikovsky Competition Adds Brass Instruments

 

Considered one of the most supreme music competitions in the world, the International Tchaikovsky Competition has announced the addition of the brass category to its 2019 competition. Since the creation of the competition in 1958, the Tchaikovsky Competition has been an important musical launchpad for international artists such as Van Cliburn, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Deborah Voigt, and many others. While the competition originally began with piano and violin, the categories have since expanded to cello, voice, and woodwind instruments. With the addition of brass instruments, this competition – held once every four years – will continue to grow for years to come.

For this landmark moment within this historic competition, Ian Bousfield, former principal trombone of the Vienna Philharmonic, will chair the jury of world-class brass performers. Also included on the jury are the following:

Jeremy E. Smith is the Founder and Editor of Last Row Music. He received music degrees from Grace College, Carnegie Mellon University, and The Ohio State University. Currently, Jeremy is the bass trombonist of the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, the Huntington Symphony Orchestra, and performs throughout Ohio, where he lives with his wife and two sons.
