Jazz Trombonist Back To Playing After Battle With COVID-19

It’s an incredible and hopeful story. With so many stories of well-known musicians losing their battles to COVID-19, this will be a story that we cling to for a long time.

Ron Wilkins, a legend in the New York City and Texas music scene, had been battling COVID-19 since late March/early April, and his road to recovery was not an easy one. Having spent 73 days in a hospital, 37 days on a ventilator, and 32 days in a medically-induced coma, Ron was able to slowly gain strength to beat the odds. Even though Ron is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force (10 years with the U.S. Air Force Band of the West), the financial cost of the healthcare will still be quite high. Ron Wilkins has played in countless big bands and Broadway shows. Getting his big break with jazz trumpeter Clark Terry, Ron has played in some of the best-known groups, and artists in the industry. As an educator, he has taught at some of the leading colleges and universities in Texas and New York. Be on the lookout for a new album being released near late July/early August entitled Trombocalist. Ron, welcome back, and we are excited to hear more of your playing and see your overall joy for music and life.
