Listen: Peter Moore Performs George Walker’s Concerto For Trombone With Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

On August 16, 2022, trombonist extraordinaire Peter Moore gave his BBC Proms solo debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, performing George Walker’s Concerto for Trombone. Conducted by Vasily Petrenko, this collaboration of a stellar soloist with an outstanding orchestra is one not to miss.

Moore’s notes and attacks are crisp and confident through the convoluted intervallic leaps in the first movement. As a commanding soloist, he does not shy away from creative risk and the orchestra follows every nuance. The second movement features similar characteristics to the first movement, just in a slower tempo. Moore enters the beginning of the third movement with gentle mastery, much different than the purposeful aggression found later in the movement. This was a remarkable performance from Peter Moore who then gave an encore rendition of David Uber’s “Blues Etude.”

The Concerto begins around the ’28:35′ timestamp in the link below. Prior to this piece, the Orchestra performed Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring with Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 following George Walker’s composition.
